Taste notes

With this natural-processed lot, we have a very smooth and balanced cup, intense flavors and aromas that work together in great harmony. Such a perfect example of what Natural Ethiopian coffee can be at its highest level. Full-bodied flavors of red wine and guava, with a delightful floral finish.

We have been working with Chelchele now since 2019 and we are so happy to have their coffee back, also this year as a naturally-processed lot to complement the washed coffees that we receive every year.

Chelchele Natural is rooted in Ethiopia’s long tradition of shade-grown, agroforestry-based coffee cultivation. In regions such as Gedeb, coffee thrives under native forest canopies, a system that enriches the soil, prevents erosion, and sustains biodiversity by protecting habitats for countless species. The natural drying method used here requires no water-intensive processing, further reducing the coffee’s environmental footprint while capturing the bright, fruit-driven profile that naturals are celebrated for. On a broader scale, Ethiopia continues to lead significant efforts in forest conservation and landscape restoration, ensuring that future generations of farmers and drinkers alike can benefit from healthy and resilient coffee lands.

Social implact is equally important. EDN Ethiopian Coffee works closely with smallholder farmers, emphasising training, transparency, and sustainable long-term relationships. Their mission extends beyond coffee, investing in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and essential community services. For millions of Ethiopian smallholders, coffee is more than a crop, it is a livelihood, and access to specialty markets means higher incomes, better yields, and improved household wellbeing. Cooperative structures also strengthen trust and solidarity among farmers, providing both economic security and social resilience.
