Raro is a washing station in Guji, Ethiopia at about 2000 m.a.s.l. About 430 farmers supply the station with hand picked beans. During harvest, ripe cherries are delivered to the station around mid-day where it gets hand sorted until the late afternoon. Afterwards, the cherries are immediately depulped by a traditional Agaarde Discpulper before they undergo a period of fermentation for 72 hours. Fresh water is used to wash the coffees in channels after this period. The coffees are then graded at this stage to ensure only the highest quality beans are separated for the final soaking and drying stages. The varietals from this region, in combination with the climate and terroir, make for a very distinct coffee.

The managing company of the Raro washing station is Snap Coffee. Together with the washing station, Snap Coffee builds schools and provides computers and other facilities for students. The company is also helping to improve infrastructure in the area so that farmers have better access to and from their farms and washing stations. There are also plans to build health clinics to improve healthcare access for the farmers and families in the area.

Snap Coffee in Ethiopia and Oslo based importer Nordic Approach have put in a lot of effort to boost transparency of the Ethiopian coffee trade. Nordic Approach visits the area each season and cups hundreds of samples in Oslo. Having direct contact with the washing station gives Nordic Approach early access to samples, direct information on coffees, and quality control in warehouses. Developing these direct relationships has an immense impact on the quality and consistency of the coffees we receive.
