This coffee was produced by members of the Dukunde Kawa cooperative and processed at the Nkara washing station. Over two hundred local farmers grow coffee on small plots of land and deliver their ripe cherries to the washing station at harvest time.
‘Dukunde Kawa’ means ‘love coffee’ in Kinyarwanda, Rwanda’s official language. The name was chosen to symbolise the power of coffee to improve the livelihood of small-scale farming families in rural communities.
Market Lane has been buying coffee from Dukunde Kawa since we opened in 2009. When we first visited them, then co-op president Anastase Minani explained that their goal was to be the very best cooperative in Rwanda. We think they’re well on their way to achieving this goal! Not only does Dukunde Kawa produce some of the best coffee in the country, but they are also continuously innovating and investing in training and infrastructure, and finding new and creative ways to support their members and their families.
