Testi Specialty Coffee purchased the AASH PLC washing station in 2019 and began working with local producers to produce specialty coffees at the station.

Around 750 local smallholders supply to the station, their farms are located at high altitudes, around or above 1,900 metres above sea level. Grown in Harrar, their coffee captures the fruity and winey character of Harrar coffees and uses Grade 1 processing to create a unique and flavourful coffee.

Farmers in this region have been growing coffee for generations. They are true specialists. Farming methods in Harrar remain largely traditional. Farmers in Harrar typically grow their coffee plants alongside other food crops. This method is common among smallholders because it maximizes land use and provides food for their families.

In addition to traditional intercropping, most farms are also organic by default. Harrar farmers typically use very little – if any – fertilizer or pesticides. Most farm work is done manually, and very little is mechanized, even during processing.

Kawa

In the beginning, there is a tree, cherries. Once picked, the cherries go through a phase of fermentation and then drying. Then the green coffee bean is ready to arrive at our ports. The transmission of these beans leaves the roaster with the heavy task of revealing their richness and putting you in the best conditions to extract it perfectly.
